Dr Shreya Maulik Banerjee, Associate Professor, School of Design, brings over 12 years of academic and research experience in ergonomics, human factors, usability and user experience. Her teaching and research integrate design thinking with ergonomics and cognitive science, with a focus on developing human-centred and inclusive solutions to complex real-world challenges.

At Anant, Dr Banerjee facilitates courses in product design, human factors, cognitive ergonomics, usability and user experience. She is also involved in building research initiatives and driving innovative projects across design disciplines. Her academic objective is to nurture future designers through a liberal and research-driven education that connects technology, human behaviour and society.

Her research interests span human factors and cognitive ergonomics, behavioural design, usability and user experience, human-machine interfaces, workstation design, product design, human-centred design and work system design. She is particularly interested in practice-based design methods and applied research that improves the interaction between people, products and systems.

Before joining Anant, Dr Banerjee served as an Associate Professor at ISDI, Atlas SkillTech University, Mumbai, where she taught core design and research courses, mentored doctoral scholars and led faculty development programmes on research writing. Earlier, she was an Assistant Professor at NMIMS School of Design, where she contributed to building the research cell and led curriculum development in Human Factors and Cognitive Design. She also taught at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai, the MIT Institute of Design, Pune and the Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University, Mumbai.

Her academic and research practice includes collaborations with national and international institutions. She has worked with the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health. She has been involved in collaborative research projects with the University of Westminster and Manchester Metropolitan University in biometric and virtual reality-based rehabilitation design. She also contributes to academic and research communities through faculty mentoring, doctoral guidance and participation in key academic bodies, including University Research Committees.

Dr Banerjee holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering with a specialisation in Human Factors and Ergonomics from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Mumbai, formerly known as NITIE. Her doctoral research focused on the ergonomic redesign of medical laboratory workstations. She also holds an MSc in Resource Management with a specialisation in Ergonomics from SNDT Women’s University and a BSc from Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi. Her academic journey reflects a sustained focus on human-centred system design and applied research in healthcare and industrial contexts.

An accomplished researcher, Dr Banerjee has authored over 31 research publications across peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and book chapters, including publications indexed in IEEE, Scopus and Web of Science. She has presented her research at several national and international conferences and has served as a reviewer for prominent conferences, including Humanising Work and Work Environment, ACED and India HCI. She is also a reviewer for Elsevier’s Human Factors in Healthcare journal.

Her contributions to research and innovation have been recognised through the Research Excellence Award for 2023–24 and 2024–25 at ISDI, Atlas SkillTech University. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE and the Interaction Design Foundation and holds over 10 design registrations and patents in human factors and product innovation. She actively mentors young researchers and supports students in transforming design projects into quality research publications and conference presentations.

Beyond academia, Dr Banerjee enjoys reading, mentoring students and guiding them in developing meaningful research projects. She also finds inspiration in travel, art appreciation and music, which fuel her curiosity, inform her teaching and encourage an open and exploratory approach to research and lifelong learning.
